I asked Dovid to elaborate a little on what steps his company is taking to fight bedbug infestation, He told me that bed bugs are very elusive, they’re not a surface insect like ants or roaches or crickets. Bed bugs are evasive. According to Davis, once bedbugs infest a house, they will embed themselves everywhere, not just the mattresses and furniture, also in wall sockets, in light fixtures, in the phone, in the clock radio, behind picture frames even in the joints of the bed frame, where the screws of the frame fit into their sockets. You can actually have a heavy or a light infestation, but whether it is fifty bugs or just 5, they will find hidden places to lay their eggs. So they’re difficult to get rid of.
I asked Dovid if he actually sprays in all of those places. He said he does. He explained that he uses four different types of sprays, depending on the location in the house. Different types of sprays are appropriate for different locations of the insects.
I asked Dovid if people can stay in their house after a bedbug treatment, or whether they have to move out for a few days. He replied that the sprays he uses are safe, and that members of the household can actually live in the house the same day of the treatment. They can even sleep in the same box spring that was just treated. Dovid emphasized that after a piece of furniture or a bed has been infested by bedbugs, they should, ideally get rid of it. However, in these days of our penny pinching economy, many people can’t run out and buy new furniture. So he does his best to make their boxspring mattress and furniture bug free and livable.
Then I asked the big question. After he’s done a hard job of treating a house, will he have to go back and treat it again, or does one treatment get rid of the bugs for good. He told me it is very very possible that he will have to do repeat applications. We generally tell people to wait a week after first treatment, to see if there are signs of recurrent bedbugs, i.e. more bites. If there are signs, he will retreat. Although, he added, if there is a continued infestation, it will be slight, maybe down from 500 bedbugs to 10.
I felt good after talking with Dovid. I was reassured to know that in the face of this silent infestation, pest specialists are hard at work, eradicating bed bugs from the homes of America.
Thanks for taking the time to read this report, and have a great pest free day!
